I wonder if, during your campaign, you ever considered the lives of my generation. I wonder if you ever questioned whether your presidency could actually kill us, whether your policies or the people you've encouraged or the countries you've insulted could actually cause our deaths. And I truly hope that the possibility never crossed your mind. Because if it had, then you’d be aware of what your presidency will mean for my generation: that we’ll die before we’re old enough to enjoy the futures that we’ve spent our childhoods working to create.
My generation has been raised in a future-oriented world; we’re taught that we need to make sacrifices now so that we can succeed when we’re older. Score good grades in middle school so we can get into high school. Join extracurricular activities in high school so we can get into college. Serve internships in college so we can build careers that we’re passionate about when we’re adults. It’s this end goal -- our careers -- that provides us with the motivation to succeed right now. As a result, we prioritize work and school over hobbies and friends, reducing our short-term happiness in order to increase our long-term happiness when we finally get to do what we love.
Your presidency has shattered the expectation that we will live long enough to have that happy future. Many of us feel personally threatened that we'll get killed or severely harmed by your administration; even if you don't issue death warrants yourself, you've empowered the white supremacists who now have the confidence and political support to freely murder minorities. Your campaign provided a platform for former KKK Grand Wizard David Duke, who regularly expresses his desire to exterminate Jews and African-Americans -- how many more supporters will he, and other leaders of hate groups, gain when you're actually in office?
Your own policies, as well, will indirectly (and sometimes even directly) kill members of my generation. The teenage Syrian refugee to whom you'll deny entrance to the country -- without the safety we could provide, what will happen to her? The young Latino you’ll deport, born illegally in America to parents from different Hispanic countries -- he’s not going to have any country to live in, and without a home, what will happen to him? The pregnant child rape victim whose pregnancy is threatening her life -- she can no longer get an abortion, so what will happen to her? What will happen to any of us?
But the greatest threat to our safety isn't coming from your policies, even with their condonement of conversion therapy and sexual assault; it's coming from the likelihood of you starting a nuclear war. You've made multiple comments about bombing any countries with whom you disagree. But when you blow up North Korea, it will retaliate. And it won't discriminate between blacks and whites, women and men, gays and straights. North Korea will simply bomb us all.
And that bomb won't just kill our physical bodies; it will also kill the metaphorical futures that we’ve been striving toward. So I implore you: please surround yourself with advisors who will help you protect our country’s youth. It’s crucial to our nation’s survival to have a healthy, thriving future generation that will continue developing America into the shining country that it has the potential to become. In your victory speech last night, you emphasized the importance of unity. It is for my generation’s sake that yours must unify America. As the Preamble of our Constitution instructs, it’s your duty to promote the general welfare, not only for yourself, but for your posterity.
